"We're gonna be on TV!"
What?
They're making a show from a collection of ridiculous family pictures?
How?
Have people run so completely out of ideas for television that they have to resort to the Internet?
As you already are aware; this television season CBS thought it would be a good idea to raid Twitter, find one of its more popular feeds, and make a sitcom out of it.
It's called Shit My Dad Says. You may have heard of it. It's some guy who tweets the, well, the shit his dad says. Apparently it's hilarious.
But only hilarious on Twitter.
According to my one-stop for 80 percent accurate information,Wikipedia, the pilot episode had some pretty mediocre ratings despite its almost 12 million viewers.
More than two million of them failed to show up for the second episode.
"And you motherfuckers better come back. I know where you live."
I haven't seen it. Maybe it's funny. I don't really know.
Or care.
But regardless of this possible television bomb, it hasn't stopped CBS from making another sitcom based off of someone's Twitterings. It's called Shh ... Don't Tell Steve, and follows one person's quest to chronicle his drunken, jobless roommate's actions, 140 characters at a time.
Shh ... Don't Tell Steve has roughly 13,000 followers.
Thirteen thousand.
At least Shit My Dad Says has over a million, and Awkward Family Photos has, from what I can tell, a few hundred-thousand.
But 13 thousand?
If that's all it takes to get a television deal around here, I'm going to start promoting my shit like crazy. Guys, help me out. Get me on TV. Get me a book deal. Tell everyone you know. All I need are 12,948 (somewhere around 12,825 on Twitter) more people to follow me and I'll be in the running for a prime time spot on a major television network.
If this happens, every single one of you will be in the credits of my show.

Content Unrelated is on Twitter and Facebook. Not yet on TV, but I'm working on it.

Those shows sound kind of lame. I agree with you, what has the world's entertainment gone to?
ReplyDeleteWell I'll mention you in my blog soon to try to help you on your quest to 13,000 followers, but I can't help get them all. Good luck!

Haha good luck with that! i will definitely watch it
ReplyDeleteI though Shit My Dad Says was somewhat funny, but over-hyped. I admit, I bought the book and I couldn't quit thinking about how lame this dude's dad is compared to my own dad and how my dad would beat his dad's ass. Of course I'm biased. Here's a glimpse of my dad watching 2 Girls 1 Cup... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECNfVTDuB5U
ReplyDeleteWhat pisses me off is the fact that this Halpern dude (author of SMDS) was a writer for Maxim. I guarantee the reason his twitter feed was so successful was because Maxim or someone/something else with an abundance of followers retweeted his posts. You HAVE to be connected AND reside on one of the coasts to be successful it seems.
